GROVE CITY — It's hard to tell from the final score that Friday night's Grove City-Franklin game featured two undefeated teams.

The Eagles tallied 71 points in the first half, including 47 in the second quarter, as they powered their way to a 91-12 rout.

The Eagles' rushing attack scored 12 touchdowns against the Knights and totaled 445 yards.

The defense also played strong against Franklin, forcing five turnovers and allowing only 131 yards.

Seventy-one of the Knights' 131 total yards came on a screen pass with 1:37 left in the first quarter, when Grove City already had 24 points and was well on its way to victory.

Grove City coach Jeff Bell said he never expected the output he saw.

"I was confident coming into the game," Bell said. "The coaches prepared the team all week and I knew we were ready, but you can never expect a game to turn out like this."

The action started fast for the Eagles as junior Erik Record found a hole in the defense 55 seconds into the game and broke up the middle of the field to score on a 60-yard run.

Record finished the game with three touchdowns and 166 yards on five carries. That was in the first half of action because he rested the entire second half.

Record was excited about the Eagles' play and looks forward to getting focused on their next game.

"This was a huge game for us," he said. "The whole team played well and I am thrilled with the outcome. We just have to get ready to get another big win next week."

When a team scores 91 points against a strong opponent, it can be hard to focus for the next game. But Bell said his team is a strong group of players and will be ready for Greenville next Friday.

"Getting the kids ready after a game like this is one of the hardest jobs of being a coach," he said. "It's easy for a team to believe they are better than they actually are after a game like this, but we have a good group and they will be focused next week."

The Eagles were a focused group the entire night Friday as they gave up no turnovers and controlled the game from beginning to end.

With 91 points on its side of the board, it looked as if a team Grove City was running up the score, but the Eagles didn't stop running the ball. Franklin's defense had no answer to anything the Eagles let loose.

This battle of the undefeated teams was over before it began and if there were any questions as to which team was truly better, Grove City answered them by halftime when the score was 71-6.
