BC3 keeps giving back to Butler

The story in the July 12 Butler Eagle showcasing the 41 county adults who gained their GED diplomas (“Residents earn diplomas through BC3 programs,” Page B6) has prompted this letter. Congratulations to all 41 for their desire and determination to complete a journey. The program that provided the opportunity was free.

Butler County Community College opened its doors 60 years ago. James Lawson, previously a Butler school district administrator, was named the first president.

In 1966, the Butler County Commissioners board was controlled by Democrats. Members included James Green and A.H. “Gus” Bachman, the democrats, and W.H. “Doc” McCune, the lone Republican. “Doc” McCune was the grandfather of Judge Tim McCune.

These three men felt a two-year community college would provide an opportunity for county students to continue their education after high school at a low cost.

The board of commissioners passed a resolution to become a local sponsor of a community college for Butler County. They added two mills to the county’s personal property tax and one-half mill to the county’s real estate tax to finance the college.

ARMCO Steel didn't hesitate to get involved, and the project moved forward with their full support.

A board of trustees was formed, with Gail Rose elected chair of the board. William Walker, Mitchell Uram and John L. Wise rounded out the officers. Eleven others were named to complete the board of trustees. Doris Rose was also heavily involved in the founding of the college. She was a highly educated woman who knew and understood the value of an education.

Commissioner Green had strong ties with political leaders in Harrisburg. Green got support for funding or startup monies. Finally, the board of trustees purchased the Oak Hills golf club from Orville and Gertrude Baker. The rest is history … just ask the 41 students who received their GED diplomas in ceremonies at BC3.
