Corbett makes trade mission
HARRISBURG — Gov. Tom Corbett said Tuesday his impending trade mission to France and Germany won’t be a European vacation.
“I think I have scheduled 48 meetings in six days that I’m there,’’ he told reporters. ‘’It’s going to be a very busy time.’’
Corbett and his entourage, which includes his chief economic-development adviser, C. Alan Walker, and representatives of several Pennsylvania companies, three universities and various regional business and development groups, will take off from Philadelphia on Saturday night.
They are scheduled to spend four days meeting with government and business leaders in Paris and Lyon, France, and two days in Stuttgart and Düsseldorf, Germany.
The trade mission is being financed through the Team Pennsylvania, a nonprofit that promotes public-private partnerships. Corbett said the only cost to taxpayers will be for the state troopers from his security detail who will travel with him.
Corbett will be accompanied by his wife Susan, who he said will meet with tourism officials in both countries.
The purpose of the trip is to increase exports of Pennsylvania products and encourage French and German companies to open or expand in Pennsylvania, the governor said.
In 2010, Pennsylvania companies exported about $1.4 billion in goods and services to Germany and $767 million to France.
This will be the first Pennsylvania foreign trade mission since the shared administration of former Govs. Tom Ridge and Mark Schweiker, a lieutenant governor who automatically succeeded Ridge when he was appointed as the national homeland security chief following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
