$1 billion to be invested in Middletown Works plant
Middletown Works, Cleveland-Cliffs’ flagship plant in Middletown, Ohio, that produces automotive-grade steels, will be getting a $1 billion investment split between the company and the U.S. Department of Energy.
Cleveland-Cliffs received a $500 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy originally designated for a clean-energy decarbonization project. The grant has since been reshaped to support a $1 billion modernization and optimization plan at the Middletown Works facility.
The investment is expected to be deployed over the next four years as Cleveland-Cliffs executes these improvements while maintaining uninterrupted steel production.
The proposal includes construction of a cogeneration plant and upgrades to a blast furnace and related material-handling operations.
Middletown Works currently produces about 3 million tons of raw steel annually according to Cleveland-Cliffs.
