GC perfect with 10-0 mark
GROVE CITY The players huddled near the end zone for a picture and held up signs that read “10-0.”
Between the camera flashes, members of the Grove City High football team gave out high fives and slapped each other on the shoulder pads.
For the first time in the program's 85-year history, the Eagles had 10-0 record.
Grove City put the finishing touches on its perfect regular season with another dominating performance.
The Eagles recorded 403 yards rushing as three Grove City backs gained more than 100 yards each in a 47-7 rout of Moniteau Friday night.
“I would be lying to you if I said I didn't feel the pressure,” said Grove City coach Jeff Bell. “I was thinking about all the things that could go wrong. (Moniteau) is a good football team. I expect they will do well in the playoffs.”
Not much went wrong for the Eagles, who jumped out to a 21-0 lead and held a 28-7 advantage at halftime.
The Grove City running game that has averaged more than 300 yards per game was in top form again.
The Eagles, averaged more than 10 yards per carry against Moniteau (5-5). Erik Record had 136 yards on 12 carries, Foster Reznor had 117 yards on 10 attempts and Harold Price 117 yards on nine carries.
Record and Reznor each scored three touchdowns. Four of their scoring runs covered 34 yards or more.
That displeased Moniteau coach Jeff Campbell greatly.
“It's just a weird team, especially defensively,” Campbell said. “We went up to (Punxsutawney), who I honestly believe is 10 times better than this, and we came out and played hard and played them honestly down to the wire.
“I'm upset with the defense. Honestly, I think our defense played with no heart tonight,” he added.
Moniteau's only score was a 22-yard touchdown run by Kyle Armagost in the second quarter.
Armagost and running back Dustin Geagan both finished with 82 yards rushing as the Warriors moved the ball well at times.
But fumbles cost the Moniteau two potential scores. It fumbled five times and lost three.
“Same thing all year: mistakes,” Campbell said. “They have just plagued us. Missed tackles, fumbles, miscues. I just asked them straight up, ‘Seriously, fellas, do you really want to go to the playoffs?' I'm not going up there and getting embarrassed like this. This is Week 10.”
Both teams are playoff bound.
Moniteau will open the District 9 Class AA playoffs next week, most likely against Brookville.
Grove City will have a bye as the No. 1 seed in District 10 Class AAA and will play either Nov. 19 or 20.
Bell had a few members of the only other 9-0 team in school history in 1961 talk to the team before the game.
“I remember when I was playing here, we talked about that team,” Bell said. “I hope someday people are talking about this one.”
