Clay Township woman accused of welfare fraud
A Butler County woman is accused of fraudulently receiving nearly $2,000 in federal food stamps last year.
The Pennsylvania Inspector General’s office on Friday charged Crystal Pierson, 35, of Clay Township with a first-degree misdemeanor count of illegally getting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.
Investigators said Pierson, in applying for and obtaining public benefits, failed to disclose that her husband was employed and receiving wages.
According to court documents, Pierson between July 1 and Sept. 30, 2014, collected $1,863 in benefits for which she was not entitled.
Her preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 19 in the office of District Judge Pete Shaffer in Butler.
