SKATEBOARD LINGO

Skateboarding was first started in the 1950s when California surfers got the idea of trying to surf the streets when waves were scarce.

Through the years the sport has risen and fallen in popularity and continued to evolve.

Here is some terminology used by skaters:

CARVING — Describes the way people lean, cut and turn on skateboards, snowboards and surfboards.

FAKIE — Refers to riding a skateboard backward.

GRINDING — The name for sliding along an edge such as a curb, bench or rail.

INDY — Describes a specific type of grabbing of the board where skater reaches his or her back hand down and grabs the toe side of the skateboard.

NOLLIE — A trick where a skateboarder uses the nose of his or her skateboard to slap against the ground and pop his or her skateboard up into the air.

ROCK AND ROLL — That's when a skateboarder rides up a ramp onto the lip, or coping, and then rides away.

TRUCK — The metal T-shaped part that mounts onto the underside of the skateboard deck, that the wheels will be attached to.
