MARS — A family of three Monday morning using the oven in their house for the first time lead to a brief fire at 321 Garfield Ave.

The fire started because the family mistook the oven's broiler compartment for a storage area and a wooden pizza serving board, called a peel, caught on fire when they turned the oven on, said Adams Area Fire District Assistant Chief Tim Llewellyn.

Mars Police Chief Kevin Radford was the first to arrive at the scene and he extinguished the fire with a chemical fire extinguisher.

No one was hurt.

Llewellyn said the damage to the oven and kitchen was about $1,000. Firefighters stayed at the scene for about an hour to help remove the damaged oven and clear the house of smoke.
