Lincoln statue replica travels to New Hampshire

CORNISH, N.H. — A 12-foot bronze monument to President Abraham Lincoln has made the journey from Gettysburg to New Hampshire.

“Abraham Lincoln: The Man” — more commonly referred to as “Standing Lincoln” — was commissioned in 1884 for Lincoln Park in Chicago. The sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, had been lured to Cornish, N.H., by the promise of “plenty of Lincoln-shaped men” who could serve as models.

On Sunday, a replica of the statue that set the standard for Lincoln likenesses to follow was installed at the Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site in Cornish.

It was cast by monument specialists at Gettysburg National Military Park and the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Training Center.

The unveiling included music by the 12th New Hampshire Regiment Serenade Band and speeches by Lincoln scholars.
