Vehicle crash leaves 2 injured in game lands
State police are investigating a one-vehicle crash Friday afternoon in Parker Township that left two people hospitalized in Pittsburgh with serious injuries, authorities said.
First-responders did not rule out that the driver, a middle-age man, may have suffered a medical emergency about 4:35 p.m. before his 2001 Dodge Dakota struck a tree along Route 268 in state game lands between Parker and Bruin.
The man and his female passenger, who is believed to be a juvenile family member, were flown by medical helicopters to an unknown hospital or hospitals. Their conditions were not known.
An accident report was not available and the investigating trooper did not immediately return a telephone call Sunday.
Emergency crews said it appeared the man was traveling north on Route 268 when the pickup truck left the road and crashed into the tree, trapping both occupants.
Rescuers used hydraulic tools to cut off both doors and the roof to extricate the driver and passenger, said Eric Feicht, chief of the Bruin Volunteer Fire Department. It took less than 15 minutes to get them out.
The driver was semi-conscious, crews said, and the passenger was conscious.
Both front air bags deployed. Neither occupant was believed to be wearing a seat belt. Both were taken by ambulance to nearby Parker City Municipal Park in Armstrong County where STAT MedEvac helicopters landed before flying them to Pittsburgh for medical treatment.
The crash closed the road for about 45 minutes. Assisting police and the Bruin VFD were Parker Township and Chicora volunteer firefighters and the Emlenton Area Ambulance Service and Karns City Regional Ambulance.
