SUV crash closes section of Route 308

CENTER TWP — A section of Route 308 was closed for about an hour Monday afternoon while firefighters extricated a vehicle that had rolled over, authorities said.

Robert Riddell, 82, of Butler was hurt after his 1998 Subaru Outback landed on its roof on the bridge near Elliott Road.

Riddell ended up at Butler Memorial Hospital with moderate injuries following the rescue, state police said.

Police said he lost control of the SUV while traveling south and struck a guardrail. The vehicle overturned and traveled another 200 feet, rolling onto its roof.

The vehicle ended in the northbound lane about one-quarter of the way onto the bridge that spans railroad tracks below.

A Lick Hill Volunteer Fire Department tanker crew, on a private water hauling call, came upon the accident and notified 911, said Steve Bicehouse, director of county emergency services.

Chief Nathan Wulff of the Unionville Volunteer Fire Department said firefighters had to stabilize the vehicle before they removed both driver’s side doors and the center post to reach Riddell.

Butler Township Fire District 3 assisted Unionville firefighters.

A Butler Ambulance Service crew tended to Riddell after he was removed from the vehicle. His condition was not known this morning.

The badly damaged vehicle had to be towed away before the road reopened to all traffic about 1:30 p.m.
