Woman receives probation in marijuana ambush case
A Clay Township teenager pleaded guilty and was sentenced to probation Wednesday for luring a man last year into an ambush with promises of marijuana.
McHayla M. Hoffman, 19, apologized to Common Pleas Judge Timothy McCune for arranging a meeting with a man Aug. 22 at a home in Clay Township under the guise of a marijuana sale.
But, according to police, the man was beaten and robbed by two other men who were in the house after he made negative comments about a cousin of one of the defendants.
Hoffman's co-defendants are Bradin A. Bender, 21, and Michael R. Edinger, 22, of Butler. Hoffman originally faced felony charges of conspiracy to commit robbery and two robbery charges for her role in the attack, but on Wednesday Assistant District Attorney Laura Pitchford reduced one of her felony charges to a misdemeanor disorderly conduct. Hoffman pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor, and the other charges were dropped. McCune sentenced Hoffman to one year of probation and 25 hours of community service.
“I was still young at the time and I had my own place, and I felt bad for someone who was on house arrest and let them stay with me,” Hoffman said. “This has opened my eyes. I'm not friends with those people. They just brought me down. That's not who I wanted to be.”
Pitchford declined to comment on how the plea deal was reached.
Hoffman's lawyer, Joel Hills, noted that his client completed an intensive outpatient program since her arrest last year, and Hoffman said she's ready to move on with her life.
Bender and Edinger's cases are active and the two face felony charges of robbery, conspiracy, theft and receiving stolen property. Bender is out of Butler County Prison on a nonmonetary bond, and Edinger is out after posting a $25,000 bond.
According to police, once the victim arrived at the home, he recounted that he was met at the door by Bender and Edinger, who had a baseball bat.
Edinger began assaulting him, according to court documents, and Bender “told him to stop running his mouth about his cousin.”
The man allegedly told police that Bender removed his wallet, which had about $520, car keys, a cell phone, cigarettes and two prescription pill bottles containing medication.
The victim said he eventually was able to escape the house, documents said, but he claimed Bender and Edinger took his car, a 2009 Hyundai Sonata.
Police said the vehicle later was found crashed a short distance away.
