Elgin Leroy Staples, a Butler native who was born on a farm on Dinner Bell Drive, passed away at the San Diego Hospice on Nov. 15, 2009, of pulmonary distress at age 86.

Staples left Butler as a young man to join the Civilian Conservation Corps. Then he went into the U.S. Navy where he survived both the Battle of Savo Island and Midway.

His is survived by his son, Shawn Staples of Los Angeles.

<B>STAPLES</B> — Elgin Leroy Staples, who died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2009, will be interred at the Montecito Cemetery in San Bernardino California, his long-time home.
