Samurai doll exhibit May 5
The Maridon Museum will host a Children's Day program Saturday featuring a new display of 19 Japanese samurai dolls at the museum, 322 N. McKean St.
Children's Day, or Kodomo-no-hi, is a national holiday in Japan celebrated on May 5 to wish both boys and girls prosperity and good health. The museum will display carp-shaped windsocks in keeping with the Japanese tradition. Carp symbolize strength and persistence.
A one-hour program by Dixie Lipnichan will begin at 10 a.m. for children age 5 and older. The program will include making a paper carp kite, and in the style of kamishibai, or story-telling, Lipnichan will present the story of "Momotaro" — The Peach Boy.
Admission to the program is free, but reservations are required.
The museum's collections/exhibit committee made up of Ann Miller, Carole Fruestorfer and Cyndy Sweeney, designed the exhibit, which will continue in the museum's multi-purpose room from through the summer.

Regular museum admission is $4 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and students, and free for children younger than 8. Museum hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. The museum is closed Mondays and holidays.
