'As You Like It'

SLIPPERY ROCK — Shakespeare's late-16th century work "As You Like It" will be staged Nov. 19 to 23 in Slippery Rock University's Miller Auditorium.

The SRU theatre department's production is directed by Laura Smiley, assistant professor of theater, and makes use of her "2008 Shakespeare Tour" class. Seven students in a spring semester theatre class analyzed the play, then adapted it as part of a student collaboration, Smiley said.

The play, known as a pastoral comedy, is believed to have been written in the late 1500s. The story is based on the Thomas Lodge novel "Rosalynde" and tells of Rosalind as she seeks safety from her uncle's court while pursuing love in the Arden Forest. The often quoted line "all the world's a stage" comes from this Shakespearian work.

The production will begin at 8 p.m. Nov. 19 to 22 with a 2 p.m. matinee Nov. 23. Tickets are $5 for SRU students or $10 for general admission. Seating is limited. Tickets can be ordered in advance and will be available one hour prior to the show at the auditorium box office. Reservations may be made by calling the Miller Auditorium box office at 724-738-2645.
