Moraine and McConnells Mill events for late July through early September
Both Moraine State Park and McConnells Mill State Park have a full schedule of special events lined up as summer draws toward a close.
Moraine State Park is offering the following “paddle” events along Lake Arthur in August. Kayak and gear will be provided, although participants can bring their own. Life jackets are required. Limited spots are available and preregistration is required. All events below are open to ages 12 and above only, and those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Aug. 11, 8 p.m.: Perseids Paddle. Join Moraine State Park Naturalists and take in the height of the Perseids meteor shower as you paddle along Lake Arthur’s shoreline.
Aug. 14, 8 a.m.: Wetlands & Wildlife Paddle. Learn about the wetlands at Moraine State Park and the wildlife that call them home.
Aug. 27, 7:45 p.m.: Full Moon Paddle. Explore Lake Arthur under the full moon.
For all events below it is recommended that participants bring water and snacks for the route and dress appropriately.
Aug. 8, 10 a.m.: Summer Wildflower Walk. Starting from the McDanels Launch Area on the North Shore at Moraine, learn about the wildflowers at Moraine State Park with a park naturalist. The route will take participants one mile along the Butterfly Trail.
Sept. 8, 8 a.m.: Fall Warbler Bird Walk. From the Barbers Point area on the North Shore at Moraine. Join the Todd Bird Club and park staff for a day of birding. Binoculars will be supplied, but bringing your own is recommended.
July 30, 6 p.m.: Butterfly lovers are invited to the kid-friendly “Monarch Madness” educational program held at the Pleasant Valley launch on the South Shore at Moraine.
Aug. 8, 11 a.m.: Muddy Creek Oil Well history demonstration. The historic Bessemer oil well at Moraine State Park is open to the public for a demonstration on the second Saturday of each month between June and October.
Aug. 13, 4 p.m.: Meet at Hell Run at McConnells Mill State Park to join a park naturalist for an hour and a half of crayfishing.
Aug. 26, 3:30 p.m. & 6 p.m.: Board the Preston’s Pearl pontoon boat and cruise Lake Arthur at Moraine State Park for a special “Eagle & Osprey Cruise.” Get one or two chances to catch a glimpse at eagles, ospreys and other majestic birds in their native habitat.
Sept. 26-27: McConnells Mill State Park hosts the 33rd annual Heritage Festival, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Portersville-Prospect. The Heritage Festival is a celebration of the late 19th and early 20th century, when the park’s historic gristmill was operating full-time. Visitors can see live demonstrations of the mill in action, and witness live arts and crafts demonstrations, including a Civil War reenactment, along with many other activities.
