A Butler man is accused of stealing a firearm from a woman’s residence and selling it.

Tyler Duane Smith, 41, was charged Tuesday, July 28, by Butler Township police with one felony count each of theft and receiving stolen property following a July 9 incident.

Police said a woman reported her firearm stolen from her home July 9. The firearm was kept in a clear plastic bin in her bedroom. She told police Smith had stayed with her for a few days around the time it was stolen, and she hadn’t been able to reach him since he left.

Four days later, the woman told police that Smith contacted her and said he sold the firearm to a man on South Sixth Avenue, police said. Smith was attempting to buy the firearm back from the man for $60 and asked the woman for the money.

The woman sent the $60 to Smith and did not receive the firearm.

Smith’s preliminary hearing has yet to be scheduled.
