Evans City farm getting odor-control system

EVANS CITY — A dairy farm on Textor Hill Road that has been a source of controversy will be getting an odor-limiting water misting system installed.

Residents say the farm, owned by John Bame, has been the source of a “pungent” odor caused by an open manure pit.

The 60-acre farm operates on property owned by MarkWest, a natural gas processing company near the farm.

“I’ve worked around landfills that used misting systems to control odor,” MarkWest special projects manager Rob McHale said. “They’re very effective.”

McHale said the misting system is the “most practical solution” to limit the smell.

The nozzles will be 2 to 3 feet apart and will be used during warm weather when the odor is more potent.

Purchasing of equipment will take place within the next 30 days and the system will be installed next spring after the last frost.

McHale said Bame agreed voluntarily and did so “in the spirit of being a good neighbor.”
