HARRISBURG — Erie's school district asked the Pennsylvania Treasury Department on Monday for a $47 million, no-interest advance, citing the agency's arrangement to pay House Democratic lawmakers and employees as a stalemate holding up billions in school aid plows through a fourth month.

Erie Superintendent Jay Badams, whose district is one of Pennsylvania's largest, said he made his case to Gov. Tom Wolf during a private meeting at the Capitol and hand-delivered a letter to the office of Treasurer Timothy Reese.

But Badams said he received no assurances from Wolf, and Treasury officials promptly said the agency has no authority to pay Erie's schools, unless the request comes from the state Department of Education.
