Harmony budget approved

Fire tax increase being considered

HARMONY — Borough council approved a tentative 2016 borough budget Tuesday evening.

The $526,920 budget is $24,700 less than this year’s spending plan.

It has for no tax increase for the borough. Its property tax rate is 12.21 mills.

However, council is considering adopting a slight tax increase for the new Harmony Fire District, which merges Harmony and Zelienople volunteer fire departments into one entity.

The increase will be from 1.125 mills to 1.5 mills.

Council Vice President Don Sims said if the council adopts the increase, it can take money out of the general fund.

Borough solicitor Matt Racunas recommended the council adopt a tax ordinance to go along with the budget to keep tax rates where they are, pending the fire protection millage increase.

Council voted to advertise the ordinance.
