Train hits pickup but driver isn't injured
FORWARD TWP — State police say a man was in his pickup stuck on railroad tracks early Saturday morning when it was hit by a train.
But 55-year-old Lester Heckard of Renfrew, identified as the driver of the 2009 Toyota Tacoma, was not injured, according to a police report Wednesday.
The Buffalo-Pittsburgh Railroad train, pulling a number of cars, hit the pickup’s bed just behind the driver’s side door at the crossing on Rader School Road.
Emergency officials initially reported that they believed two men had been in the truck but both had gotten out before the crash.
The report said Heckard was driving north on Rader School Road, just north of Stuckey Road, where he crossed the tracks and struck a water runoff ditch, leaving the truck bed across the tracks.
The conductor applied the brakes but was unable to stop the train before it hit the truck. Police said Heckard remained in the driver’s seat.
“(He) related his body size prevented him from exiting the truck when he saw the train coming,” the report said.
No charges were filed.
