Accord ends planned strike

MUNHALL — Teachers have canceled a planned strike today in a Western Pennsylvania school district following a tentative agreement reached over the weekend.

Officials said the accord between the Steel Valley School District and Steel Valley Education Association was reached late Saturday night after an 11-hour bargaining session involving a state mediator.

The union represents 134 teachers and other professional employees. Spokesman Susan Salapa said teachers will vote on the proposal today.

She and district labor attorney Gerik Jenco both said they were happy with the agreement but declined to release details.
