Union kicks off drive for Pitt faculty PITTSBURGH — Two campus groups aligned with the United Steelworkers have kicked off a drive at the University of Pittsburgh to unionize about 5,000 faculty members and nearly 3,000 graduate employees.The union is working with both groups of employees to form separate bargaining units — one for adjuncts and all other faculty and another for the graduate workers at the university.Hundreds of university employees have contacted the Pittsburgh-based union seeking representation, said union spokesman Maria Somma. Somma said at least 30 percent of faculty and graduate employees must be interested in joining before an organizing vote can be held, but the union is hoping to attract at least 50 percent of the employees.

Cal-U furloughs 7 nonfaculty workersCALIFORNIA — California University of Pennsylvania is cutting seven nonfaculty positions two years after it eliminated 30 jobs.The cuts in 2014 came in response to falling enrollment.School spokesman Christine Kindl wouldn’t say if the new round of furloughs were also linked to enrollment, which has declined from nearly 9,500 in 2011 to more than 7,800.
