IN BRIEF

MONROEVILLE — The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center plans to build a new, seven-story hospital on the site of a former hotel in the suburb of Monroeville.

UPMC bought the Palace Inn hotel near the Pennsylvania Turnpike for $19 million in March. At the time, the health care network said it would convert the building into a health facility.

But according to a filing with the local planning commission, UPMC now plans a 334,000-square-foot hospital and a parking garage on 16 acres. The plans also include an emergency room and a cancer center.

A UPMC spokesman confirms only a "full-service" hospital is planned.
