Reiser wants to end career with a crown
GREENSBURG— Nicole Reiser's college basketball career at the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg has had plenty of cake.
Now she's looking for some icing.
A third-year starter and 1,000-point scorer for the Bobcats, the Knoch graduate is hungry for an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship.
Pitt-Greensburg took a 9-1 overall record into the holiday break. The team resumed play Saturday.
"We had a really good team here my freshman year and this one reminds me of that,"Reiser said. "Everybody's cheering for each other, everyone's excited — we're all together as one."
Reiser was the first player off the bench as a freshman, averaging nine points and four rebounds in 24 games.
She is the lone senior on this year's team and ranks first on the squad with 31.7 minutes per game, second with 14.6 points per game, second with 23 steals, first with 45 assists, third with 44 rebounds and first with 12 3-pointers.
"Nicole has developed into such a well-rounded player," Pitt-Greensburg coach Carol Gelet said. "There's nothing she can't do for us on the floor."
"Because I am the only senior, I've tried to take a prominent role, but it's more because I'm the point guard,"Reiser said. "The nature of that position is to be the court leader."
Gelet is in her 10th season as Bobcats coach. The Division IIIprogram is in its 12th season.
"A lot of good players have been through here"Gelet said.
Seneca Valley graduate Torey Auld is among them. She remains the Bobcats' all-time assists leader with 563.
Reiser, who has 321, is a distant second in that category on the career charts.
Reiser is about to break Auld's school record of 127 career 3-point field goals. She needs four to do that.
Auld served as assistant coach at Knoch during Reiser's junior and senior seasons.
"We've stayed in touch,"Reiser said. "I told her that her assist record was safe. That thing is going to stand forever."
Butler graduate Julie Ehrman sank 78 percent of her free throws with the Bobcats, hitting 64 of 82. Reiser is at 76.2 percent for her career, but with more attempts, hitting 209 of 272.
Reiser recently became the fifth player in program history to score 1,000 points. She has 1,054 in her career and likely will wind up third on the program's list.
"Nicole has made her mark on our record book, that's for sure,"Gelet said. "She's not the fastest or quickest player we've had here, but she has court smarts."
Reiser was a second-team, all-AMCCplayer last year and likely will be a first-team selection this season.
"We have a freshman from Serra Catholic, Bria Gwosden, who is our sixth player this season, like Nicole was during her freshman year,"Gelet said.
"Everybody wants to start. Nicole wasn't crazy about the sixth-player role and neither is Bria" she added. "Nicole's helped her adjust to it and Bria helps Nicole get the ball up the court at times."
As for the record book?
"I haven't looked at it for a while,"Reiser said. "I know I'm going to get the 3-pointer record, but I don't know where I'm at in a lot of other categories.
"I just want to play as hard as I can. I'll see where I'm at when it's over."
Pitt-Greensburg has been to the AMCCchampionship game six times in seven years.
"That's the most important thing,"Reiser said. "I want to win."
