Suspected cocaine found at jail
A woman arrested on an out-of-county warrant following a rollover crash last week in Butler landed in more trouble when she was allegedly found with suspected cocaine at the Butler County Prison, authorities said.
Jade M. Martin, 37, of Homestead is charged with a felony count of possession of a controlled substance by an inmate.
Butler police came upon Martin while investigating a one-vehicle wreck about 11:20 a.m. Dec. 6 on Pepperland Boulevard off Route 8 south.
The defendant was one of three occupants, all women, in a Chevrolet Trax that rolled onto its driver's side while traveling up the hill. Two passing motorists saw the crash and stopped, helping the occupants get out of the SUV.
At least two of the crash victims appeared to have minor injuries, witnesses said. Police identified Martin as the driver.
Officers subsequently arrested the defendant and another of the occupants, Demikea Williams, 38, of Pittsburgh, after they found both were wanted on warrants out of Allegheny County.
Both women eventually were taken to the Butler County Prison for the unspecified warrants. During a strip search, police said, a correctional officer turned up suspected cocaine under Martin's clothing.
Police filed the criminal charge Wednesday. By then, she had been released on bail for the warrant.
On Friday, police cited Martin with three traffic violations stemming from the crash, including driving without a license, traveling too fast for conditions and reckless driving.
Authorities said Williams was later transferred to the Allegheny County Jail for her warrant.
