Edinboro slips by Slippery Rock, 28-24

Cleckley

EDINBORO — Trevor and time — a deadly combination to Slippery Rock University.

Edinboro senior quarterback and fourth-year starter Trevor Harris drove the Fighting Scots 70 yards in eight plays for the deciding score in a 28-24 football victory Saturday night at Sox Harrison Stadium.

The drive took only a minute and 15 seconds and the winning touchdown pass occurred with 24 seconds remaining.

"That guy is amazing," SRU defensive coordinator Shawn Lutz said of Harris. "He doesn't panic back there. I thought we had him rattled, but we didn't.

"He made some pinpoint throws during that last drive."

SayQuan Scott-Mitchell scored on an 18-yard run with 1:39 left, capping a nine-play, 71-yard drive for The Rock and giving his team a 24-21 advantage in what had turned into a see-saw affair.

"It started to look like the type of game where whoever had the ball last was gonna win," SRU coach George Mihalik said.

That's how Harris saw it.

"After they scored on us, Trevor wasn't down at all," Edinboro coach Scott Browning said. "He just grabbed his helmet, looked at me and said: 'Coach, this is what I get paid for.' He loved being in that situation."

During the winning drive, Harris converted a fourth-and-1 with a quarterback sneak, found Josh Brown for a 13-yard completion, then drilled a 23-yard pass to Marcus Johnson along the right sideline, splitting two defenders.

The latter play gave the Scots (2-1, 1-0) a first down at the SRU 24-yard line.

"If there's a better quarterback in the PSAC, I'd like to see him play," Lutz said. "That sideline pass into double coverage? Ridiculous."

On the next play, Harris connected with Josh Brown — locked in single coverage with A.J. Saunders — along the left sideline. Saunders slipped and Brown tip-toed into the end zone.

"A.J. was trying to jump up into press coverage and lost his footing," Mihalik said.

Browning said Harris called the game-winning play at the line of scrimmage while looking over the defense.

"He's such an intelligent player," the Scots' coach said. "He read the coverage and made the throw."

"If our line blocks and we receivers get open, Trevor's gonna get us the ball," Brown said. "It was just me and the corner one-on-one there and it's up to me to beat him."

The loss was SRU's first in four games and spoiled a balanced offensive attack. The Rock (3-1, 0-1) rushed for 215 yards and threw for 200. Damarcus Cleckley had 20 carries for 102 yards and a touchdown.

The teams traded first-quarter touchdowns, but SRU missed chances to take the lead in the first half. C.J. Bahr was wide left on a 40-yard field goal attempt — his first errant kick of the year — and Rocco Colavecchia tossed an interception in the end zone on first down from the Scots' 24-yard line with 44 seconds left in the half.

"Jermale (Cromerdie) cut his route off short there," Mihalik said. "It hurt not getting any points at the end of the half.

Edinboro made it hurt more by scoring a TD on the first possession of the second half. Harris scored on a 9-yard run to cap a 46-yard drive. The Rock has allowed a touchdown on the first possession of the second half in all four of its games this year.

SRU responded, however, with a 31-yard Bahr field goal. A 28-yard Colavecchia scramble and 21-yard run by Scott-Mitchell highlighted an 87-yard drive that gave The Rock a 17-14 lead with 14:23 left in the game.

A Harris swing pass to Gary Nolen worked for 40 yards, setting up a Junior Jabbie 2-yard scoring run with 6:09 to play. Then the teams traded the two late touchdowns.

"This was a classic hard-fought game between two Division II rivals," Browning said. "Nothing they (SRU) did surprised me. Slippery Rock is Slippery Rock. They come out, play physical, hit you in the mouth and give themselves a chance to win the game late.

"They came in here 3-0 when they could have been 0-3. That shows the character of that football team."

Mihalik offers no argument.

"The game played out like we hoped," Mihalik said. "We stuck around and gave ourselves a chance to win in the fourth quarter. It just didn't happen for us."

The Rock hosts Indiana (Pa.) at 7 p.m. Saturday at N.Kerr Thompson Stadium.
