Big 4th quarter drives Bears past Bishop McCort

HERSHEY — Desimon Green rushed over to join his Clairton teammates for a team picture when someone in the jubilant crowd behind the players yelled, "That's how you finish!"

A fourth-quarter flourish and a Bishop McCort turnover allowed the Bears to finally take home the PIAA Class A title.

Green scored the go-ahead touchdown after recovering a fumble, threw a key block to help spring Deontae Howard for an 80-yard scoring run and helped Clairton's defense contain the Crushers' vaunted rushing attack in a 15-3 victory Friday.

A year after losing the Class A title to Steelton-Highspire, the Bears left chilly Hersheypark Stadium with gold medals and wide smiles.

"Oh yeah," Green said when asked if he felt better this year. "We're state champs!"

Howard had 24 carries for 150 yards for Clairton (15-1), while Josh Seidel paced McCort (14-1) with 111 yards on 22 carries.

Dane Domonkos scored McCort's only points with a 23-yard field goal in the third quarter, but also fumbled twice in the fourth.

"We held them in check until late in the fourth quarter," Crushers coach Ken Salem said. "I just wish we were able to get a little more push and get our offense going.

"The turnovers really hurt us, but this has been a fantastic year," he added.

Only two opponents have managed double-digit points on Clairton this season. McCort's running game found breathing room at times against the Bears, but couldn't get into the end zone.

McCort, averaging 286 rushing yards a game, was held to just 154 on 38 carries.

"All year long. It's been the same thing all year long," Clairton coach Tom Nola said about his defense. "The other team was bigger and stronger than us, but our heart and our determination really came through on defense."

Class AAA Selinsgrove 10, Manheim 7

The stadium lights were darkened and the stands were empty save for a some diehard fans, but a few of the Selinsgrove Seals still couldn't bear to leave the Hersheypark Stadium field.

Some players laid down on the turf and pretended to make snow angels, while others skipped and danced to the locker room. Quarterback Cory Briggs did a head-over-heels tumble at the 45.

There's much to celebrate in Selinsgrove after a thrilling 10-7 win over Manheim Central gave the school its first PIAA Class AAA title.

Seth Lauver stumbled into the end zone from six yards out with 1:47 left for the go-ahead score and Selinsgrove (16-0) turned away the Barons' last-ditch drive with two big defensive plays.

"I can't believe this. It's the greatest feeling of our whole lives," said senior Ryan Keiser, sporting a wide grin as he nervously paced in place in front of screaming fans. Keiser had an interception, then held on to a key third-down catch after a big hit prolonged a drive that ended with Lauver's touchdown.
