College honors county teachers
Teachers from Mars, Grove City and Slippery Rock are among the 33 educators recognized with Great Teacher Awards from Saint Vincent College.
The three recipients are Debbie Cooke of Trinitas Study Center in Grove City, Charlesa Fassinger of Mars High School and Timothy Mengel of Slippery Rock High School.
The teachers were nominated by their former students who are now freshmen at Saint Vincent College in Laurel Highlands.
Cooke was nominated by former student Samuel Whittaker, who said the teacher gave him a love for science and reassured him that faith, morality and science can coexist.
“She has inspired me to pursue a career,” Whittaker said. “Because of her I love learning.”
Fassinger was nominated by former student Samantha Hornyak, who called her “one of the best teachers I have ever had,” and a person who pushed her through National Honor Society to achieve.
Mengel was nominated by former student Zachary Swartz, who said the educator “surpasses all the norms as an educator and role model” who went beyond note-taking in the classroom.
The award recognizes educators for “excellence in teaching that provides a positive and enduring influence on students,” the college said in a news release.
