Pitt wins without Lewis running

PITTSBURGH — Pitt probably couldn't have won any game last year with Dion Lewis running for only 27 yards. The Panthers can now, and coach Dave Wannstedt is convinced that's the sign of a young team that's growing up quickly.

Tino Sunseri threw for two touchdowns in a span of 5 minutes and backup running back Ray Graham ran for 115 yards and two scores to help the Panthers pull away for a 38-16 victory over New Hampshire on Saturday.

Pittsburgh (1-1) bounced back from an overtime loss at No. 20 Utah to deny New Hampshire (1-1) — ranked No. 6 in the Football Championship Subdivision — its sixth consecutive victory over an FBS opponent.

Sunseri, whose interception in overtime led to Pitt's opening game loss in his first career start, threw a 2-yard scoring pass to Cam Saddler with 18 seconds left in the first half, making it 17-3. Sunseri followed that with a 56-yard TD pass to Jon Baldwin with 4:42 gone in the second half.

Sunseri went 24 of 34 for 275 yards and an interception. Baldwin made six catches for 100 yards and drew an interference penalty that led to another score.

Graham, picking up the yards that Lewis couldn't gain, ran for touchdowns of 64 and 8 yards in the second half during his first career 100-yard game. Pitt outgained New Hampshire 445-298.

"We have so many young players with so much growth potential," said Wannstedt, who started four seniors, two each on offense and defense. "I beg you to check any team's roster and you won't find many, if any, that have that amount of young players. We're still not there yet, but we want to be playing our best football in December."

Lewis, a second team All-American while rushing for 1,799 yards as a freshman, wasm held to 27 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries — only one in the second half.
