Amy Pack: Butler County tourism reaches historic heights

Butler County Time Capsule 2026

This article is one in a series of articles about what life looks like in Butler County ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026. Stories in this series aim to showcase what it’s like to live, work, play and serve in Butler County during this moment in history.

If someone a century from now were to look back at Western Pennsylvania, the year 2026 would stand out as a golden era for Butler County.

Today, the local tourism industry is in its strongest position in history. Marketing reach and visitor spending have soared to unprecedented highs driven by an unyielding spirit of local entrepreneurship, unique vision and a deep sense of community collaboration that continues to propel the region forward.

Experience Butler County is capitalizing on this historic momentum. Looking ahead, the organization is preparing to further fuel this growth by relocating its headquarters and a brand-new visitor center to the historic T.W. Phillips Building in downtown Butler, establishing a centralized presence in the county.

We truly offer something for everyone. Every corner of the county offers something quite special. There are so many reasons people come to Butler County — whether it’s for a weekend getaway, a major sports tournament, a corporate convention or an outdoor enthusiast looking to shop, eat and explore.”

Strollable small towns

At the heart of this booming tourism economy are Butler County’s incredible small towns. Moving far beyond mere quick stopovers, communities like Zelienople, Harmony, Saxonburg and the City of Butler have transformed into vibrant, self-sustaining travel destinations.

Visitors are consistently drawn to these beautifully strollable main streets. Their strength lies in their carefully curated business mix, offering local independent dining, boutique shopping, craft breweries, living history and active arts communities.

Each town offers a unique experience and a wonderful business mix that keeps people coming back season after season.

Elite sports and living history

While the charm of the county's small towns anchors its leisure travel, two massive industry trends have shaped the modern travel landscape: sports tourism and heritage tourism.

Sports tourism has exploded into a premier economic driver for the county. The region offers an abundance of premium sports venues engineered for all age groups and skill levels, solidifying Butler County’s reputation as a tournament capital.

The county’s athletic resume spans ice hockey, court sports and field sports — including elite soccer and rugby fields — anchored by premium facilities like the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. It also embraces pickleball, championship disc golf and triathlons. In fact, the expansive terrain of Moraine State Park is taking center stage this year by proudly hosting both the 2026 PDGA Junior Disc Golf World Championships and the 2026 Pennsylvania State Triathlon Championships.

Simultaneously, history has taken center stage in 2026 as the nation celebrates the America250 semiquincentennial. This milestone has given Butler County a massive platform to showcase its pivotal role in early American history — including landmarks along Washington’s Trail 1753 and its legacy as the birthplace of the Jeep.

This celebration reminded us how very special our stories and origins are. The increased efforts to show our love for our country are evident everywhere this year, from community public art installations to historic reenactments and festivals.

Looking toward the horizon

As Experience Butler County continues to expand its reach from its new central headquarters, the long-term hope for the future remains grounded in sustainable growth. The goal is to continue thriving, expanding offering and inviting travelers to experience a truly special place, where quality of life continues to be at the core of our experiences.
