Ex-SRU coach to lead Findlay

SLIPPERY ROCK — Former Slippery Rock University special teams and recruiting coordinator Rob Keys was named head football coach at the University of Findlay (Ohio).

Findlay is a Division II program that competes in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Keys was the co-defensive coordinator and special teams coach at Findlay from 2000-04. He was special teams coordinator for a year at Indiana State before coming to The Rock.

“Findlay knows all about Rob’s work ethic and how positive a person he is,” SRU head football coach George Mihalik said.

Keys also served as defensive backs coach during his time (2006-09) at SRU.

The Rock’s Jason Makrinos is the team’s third recruiting coordinator in five years.

“That’s just part of coaching,” Mihalik said. “When you hire good people, you expect them to have opportunities to move on.”

Keys left SRU after the 2009 season to become defensive backs coach at the University of New Hampshire. He helped lead the Wildcats to a No. 10 ranking in Div. I-AA and a berth in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

A West Virginia University graduate, Keys played on the Mountaineers team that won the Big East championship in 1993. He played in the Sugar Bowl and Carquest Bowl with WVU.
