UPMC buys hospital in Ireland

UPMC has acquired Aut Even Hospital, the oldest private hospital in the Republic of Ireland, making it UPMC's third such acquisition in the country in as many years.

In the health care company's third acquisition in the Eire, UPMC has purchased Aut Even Hospital in Kilkenny, Republic of Ireland.

Aut Even, the oldest private hospital in Ireland, will become UPMC Aut Even and will join UPMC Kildare in Clane and UPMC Whitfield in Waterford as its Irish brethren. The company also operates its Carlow outreach center, a sports-medicine clinic and a radiology center in Ireland.

It acquired Whitfield in 2018 and Kildare in 2019, making Aut Even its third Irish acquisition in as many years.

“In coordination with nearby UPMC Whitfield Hospital and other UPMC operations stretching from Kildare to Cork, the purchase of Aut Even gives us the opportunity to conveniently and effectively treat more patients close to home,” Charles Bogosta, president of UPMC International, said in a Monday news release. “Our growing footprint in Ireland means that more patients in more places will have access to health care managed by a leading academic medical center focused on providing cutting-edge treatments and world-class quality to every patient we serve.”

Terms of the deal were not immediately released, but the sale is subject to approval by the Irish Competition and Consumer Protection Commission.

Aut Even was placed in receivership six years ago after Mount Carmel Medical Group, its then-owner, underwent severe financial difficulties. Most recently, it was controlled by Beltany Property Finance, a private equity company affiliated with The Goldman Sachs Group Inc.

As a private hospital, Aut Even is largely known for elective procedures. The 150-year-old institution has 71 beds with an 18-bed surgery unit. According to UPMC, the hospital provides services across more than 20 specialties, including orthopedics, gynecology and radiology.

The hospital is also accredited by The Joint Commission International, a U.S.-based nonprofit that provides health care accreditation.

David Beirne, managing director of UPMC in Ireland and senior vice president of UPMC International, said the three-hospital network should provide efficiency to the company overseas.

“With the acquisition of Aut Even, UPMC will expand patient choice for receiving trusted, high-quality care in Ireland,” he said Monday. “UPMC also expects to continue working closely with our public hospital partners, as we've done both before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, to assist in providing needed care to all patients.”

UPMC also said the newly acquired hospital will benefit from the company's “planned investments in new or additional medical services and technologies.”

The company further plans on opening a global technology operations center in Kilkenny.
