3 brothers have plenty of bucks

Young Henchars are successful in deer season

LANCASTER TWP — Never a serious hunter himself, Wayne Henchar had to change his ways.

His three sons insisted on it.

Henchar, 47, of Lancaster Township had dabbled in hunting from the time he was 19.

"But I was never really serious about it," he said. "I'd get a deer every now and then. … Sometimes I didn't even go out.

"But when I saw the interest my boys had in hunting at a very young age, I figured I had to be there for those guys. So I got serious about it."

So did his sons. This is the first year all three were old enough to hunt and all three bagged a good-sized buck.

Wayne Henchar Jr., 17, got a 9-point during bow season on a friend's property in Lancaster Township. His brother, Brett, 14, got a 9-point on the first day of gun season.

Their youngest brother, Chad, 12, got a 7-point on the first day of gun season as well — from the same tree stand as Brett that is located on the family's property."I figured I'd get one," the youngest Henchar said. "We saw about 14 deer that day before I got mine."Chad Henchar got his deer at approximately 4:30 p.m. on opening day. His brother got his deer at 7:30 a.m.The two headed to the tree stand together at 5:30 a.m."I saw one in the field about 250 yards away," Brett Hencher said. "He started running toward us and I shot him from about 200 yards."After doing so, he remained in the tree-stand with his brother."It was fun watching Brett get his," Chad Henchar said. "It got a little boring after a while waiting for mine, but it was awesome for us both to get one."Wayne Jr. wanted to hunt since he was a small child."I remember him leafing through hunting magazines when he was 3," his father said.

"I've always been fascinated by it," Wayne Jr. admitted. "I couldn't wait to get out there."Wayne Jr. has gotten a deer every year since he was 12. This was the first year he's gotten one during bow season. The 9-point buck his biggest."Just keep up with it and try to get a bigger buck every year," he said of his hunting goal. His ultimate goal down the road is to get a turkey, doe, buck and black bear all in the same year. No one in the family has gotten a bear yet.Brett Henchar also has gotten a deer during each of his three hunting seasons. The 9-point was his biggest ever. The Henchar family also hunts bear together in Cooks Forest."Turkey, rabbit, pheasant — we do all of it," the elder Henchar said. "We're trying to get a license to hunt elk in Montana.""It's good family time," Wayne Jr. said of hunting."We didn't see any (bears) this year, but we'll keep going," Chad Henchar promised.
