Artists bring their creations to the light of the Moon Markets in Butler

Some craft vendors started making their products out of boredom, some do it as a form of self expression, but for Madison Eichner, Butler resident and owner of Madison Makes It, sewing started as a way to make Christmas presents without breaking the bank fresh out of graduate school.

Once she started, however, she couldn’t stop.

“I was like ‘This is so much fun, I want to do this more,’ but when you make so much stuff, you don’t have anything to do with it,” said Eichner.

Butler’s Main Street turns into an event of it’s own every third Friday this summer, with the Moon Markets and Foodie Fridays just a few blocks from each other. The Moon Markets line the sidewalk with trinkets, including everything from books to jewelry; while Foodie Fridays brings a feast of food trucks.

While Eichner is no stranger to vendor shows and markets, this is her first year at the Moon Markets with her table. She brought out book pouches, bookmarks and other sewn pieces.

While a small part of why she attends the market is to sell her creations, Eichner said she also simply enjoys interacting with others.

“I’m a therapist. That’s my day job, so I really like to connect with people. I like to talk to people. I like to be around people,” Eichner said.

Mackenzie Hohn, owner of 3 Eyed Gemini, has been bringing her wire wrapped gemstone jewelry and embroidered clothing to the Moon Markets since they started. For Hohn, she said it’s the atmosphere that keeps her coming back.

“I just love seeing all the people, the atmosphere, the environment. It’s enjoyable,” Hohn said.

Original paintings and prints done by artists are not hard to stumble across at the Moon Markets. One painter, Tiffany McGouldrick, owner of Pale Art Studios, showed off prints of her original series titled Nightfall. The pieces feature landscapes of the sky at dusk and dawn inspired by how she sees the world.

“I actually have an autoimmune disease. I’m allergic to sunlight and so I paint the world in a way that I experience it,” McGouldrick said.

McGouldrick is a repeat vendor at the Moon Markets, having been to three of them previously. She said attending shows such as the market can make an often isolating process feel less lonely.

“Being an artist can be solitary because it’s kind of you, your canvas, your easel, maybe your cat,” McGouldrick said. “But you come out to these events and you get to share everything with everybody, you know?”

McGouldrick said children often come to her booth to look at her originally designed stickers. In children’s curiosity, she tries to find a way to be an encouraging voice.

“I remember there was one kid that saw and said, ‘I could never do this,’ and I said, ‘That’s absolutely not true. If you want it, believe it, do it.” McGouldrick said.
