Sheriff’s office receives Homeland Security funding

Butler County Sheriff

The Butler County Sheriff’s Office has received $197,500 in funding from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Sheriff Mike Slupe said he plans to use about $100,000 for a new vehicle and liability insurance for deputies working with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and use the remaining $97,500 to buy new tasers and other equipment for deputies.

He said he planned on including the purchase of three department vehicles in the 2027 county budget.

“That number will be reduced to two, and it will save $50,000 to $60,000 in the 2027 budget,” Slupe said. “We are now using this money that was in the budget for the federal government, not county taxes.”

With that money in the books, he said he is waiting for ICE to reimburse the county about $74,000 to pay for the time and benefits of the deputies who worked with ICE. Slupe said he sends invoices to ICE to cover the deputies’ costs.
