Finding a groove

Seneca Valley's Will Koontz (42) isdefended by Michael Molisani (5) of St.Joseph's during the Raiders' 9-2 boyslacrosse win Thursday night.

JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley was ahead, but coach Peet Poillon knew his Raiders could do better.

Then, in the final quarter, SV found its groove in a 9-2 boys lacrosse win over Saint Joseph's Collegiate Institute Thursday at NexTier Stadium.

The Raiders scored four goals in the span of three minutes and 40 seconds, turning a 5-2 lead into the seven-goal cushion they would win by.

“It just came down to telling the guys what they needed to do and them going out and doing it,” said Poillon. “We didn't do a good job of organizing and communicating in the first three quarters.”

The fourth-period scoring included two goals from David Hall, his second and third tallies of the game, and a pair from Mike Argyros.

Hall's goal with 4:39 left in the game capped the scoring.

For St. Joseph's, a prep school from Buffalo, the team simply ran out of gas.

The school is currently on spring break and the Marauders used it to schedule a four-game road trip.

Thursday's game at SV was the team's fourth game in four days, following contests at Bethel Park, University High (W.Va.) and Morgantown High.

“We just got tired,” said Marauders' coach Peter Hudecki. “We are a little banged up and had some kids playing defense who aren't used to playing there.”

SV (4-5) got on the board with Wendell Frank's tally five minutes into the game.

By the end of the period, the hosts had built a 3-1 edge after goals by Derek Finney and Hall.

The second quarter saw the Raiders' offense misfire. The team managed 10 shots in the first 11:50 of the period, but St. Joe's goalie Paul Englert was forced to make just two saves due to shots going wide of the net.

Finally, with just seven seconds left before intermission, Jordon Kelly skipped a shot past Englert for a 4-1 lead.

“We can't take quarters off,” said Poillon. “We have to play a full game, that's what it's going to take to win section games.”

SV's Cole Fyock answered Michael Hubert's goal for St. Joe's late in the third quarter.

St. Joe's had 21 shots and forced SV goalie Jake Succop to make nine saves, but Hudecki was hoping for more.

“I really feel if we would have possessed the ball more, it would have given us a better chance to stay in the game,” he said.

SV's defense had a hand in frustrating the Marauders.

“We've been very strong on defense lately,” said Poillon. “We have some young guys back there, but they are starting to figure out what they're all about.”

Englert made seven saves.

Scoring for the Marauders (7-6) early in the first period was Christian Curatolo.

Seneca Valley assists went to Brendan Thomas (three), Will Koontz (two) and Fyock.
