Bell Ringers

North Catholic's girls volleyball team is looking for celebrations in 2020 like this playoff win over Freeport last season. The Trojanettes are coming off a PIAA championship run last year.
North Catholic volleyball looks to continue championship tradition with new seniors

CRANBERRY TWP — Bells and Banners.

It's a slogan North Catholic volleyball coach Amanda Fetter repeats often and it has stuck in the minds of her players.

At North Catholic, little means more to its seniors than getting a chance to ring the campus bell after a WPIAL or PIAA title. Little means more than hanging championship banners from the rafters.

Volleyball is no exception and in 2019, the Trojanettes got to ring a lot of bells and raise a banner in winning the PIAA Class AA championship.

“We definitely want to keep that going,” said senior Bella Madonna. “Watching those seniors ring that bell — I just kept thinking I want to be able to do that one day. It's an extra motivation for sure, to be able to do that, to keep that tradition going.

“Our goal is to get some titles.”

On paper, that may be a bit challenging this season for a team that lost eight seniors, including all-state and Butler Eagle Girls Volleyball Player of the Year Dominique Felix, who put up some gaudy numbers a season ago.

Felix recorded a staggering 604 kills last season.

She's gone to graduation, however. So is Ava Whitesel, Anna Schoeppner and Libby Palmer — all key performers for the 24-1 Trojanettes in 2019.

“We definitely took a hit; there's some big shoes to fill,” Fetter said. “Those guys are irreplaceable. They're not only irreplaceable because of their skill level, but who they were. My team last year was top-shelf across the board in every category. They were amazing. Great people, students, friends. It was a beautiful, beautiful thing to be a part of and I'm thankful for that every day.

“But we're also definitely blessed. We have a really good sophomore class.”

They're going to have to mature into some big roles in 2020.

Senior Elizabeth Feczko isn't concerned.

One of those sophomores expected to fill those big shoes is her sister, Ally.

Elizabeth is 5-foot-6. Ally, though, is a 5-9 outside hitter.

“She got the tall genes,” Elizabeth joked.

During the COVID-19 quarantine, Elizabeth and Ally thought outside the box and found an interesting way to stay in volleyball shape.

They purchased a lacrosse rebounder — a spring-loaded trampoline net — and peppered it with a volleyball.

“We were out all the time,” Elizabeth said. “It comes back on an arc back to you and it was perfect for passing and receiving.”

Elizabeth, who will play at Villanova next year, is one of the best back-row players in the state.

“E, that kid is a stud,” Fetter said. “No other way to put it.”

With Madonna also manning the back row and the slew of young talent at the net, the Trojanettes have designs on a WPIAL and/or another PIAA title run.

They're just happy to be making a run at all.

With the season in doubt — and still in the balance with the uncertainty surrounding the virus — North Catholic isn't taking anything lightly.

Especially Fetter.

“I'm super super superstitious,” Fetter said. “I haven't put any practice times or games in my calendar. I don't want them to get canceled.”

Elizabeth said there was some nervous times during quarantine, wondering if there would be a season.

Now that practice has started, the nerves are still there that they will be able to finish it.

“We know it can end any day,” Elizabeth said. “We're not taking any day for granted. If we get a chance to play our season, we'll be ready. If something happens and we can't, we did everything we could.”
