WVU fans avoiding bowl game
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia fans traditionally travel in droves to bowl games. Probably not this season.
Despite its first Bowl Championship Series appearance in four years, the university has sold just 6,100 tickets for the Orange Bowl on Jan. 4 between No. 23 West Virginia (9-3) and No. 14 Clemson (10-3). That’s slightly more than one third of WVU‘s allotment of 17,500 tickets.
WVU sports marketing director Matt Wells on Thursday blamed part of the slow sales to the midweek time slot for the game in Miami. Fans who will be coming off a long holiday break aren’t willing to allocate more vacation time.
WVU also has to compete with websites that are offering cheaper seats with plenty still available.
