Police: Butler man injures trooper during traffic stop

A Butler man reportedly injured a state trooper during a traffic stop in Harrison Township, Allegheny County, state police said.

Steven T. Guthrie, 44, was charged Sunday, June 7, by state police in Kittanning with felony aggravated assault and one misdemeanor count each of terroristic threats, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and DUI following a traffic stop Saturday.

Police encountered Guthrie on Route 28 south near Exit 16 for Freeport and Millerstown after being dispatched for an erratic driver. Police said Guthrie showed signs of impairment after he was stopped, and a Miller Light beer can was visible in the rear passenger seat.

Police said a trooper attempted to open the vehicle’s door after asking Guthrie to exit it, and Guthrie pulled it shut. Guthrie then exited the vehicle but refused to place his hands on the bumper and follow other commands, police said.

Police said a trooper sustained minor injuries to his left hand and below his right eye during the stop but did not specify how the injuries occurred.

Police said Guthrie also told the trooper “next time I see you, you’re going to die,” and “I’m going to kill you.”

Guthrie is being held in Allegheny County Jail on a $5,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. June 17 before District Judge Carolyn S. Bengel.
