In her post regarding "abstinence-only" education Nancy writes that most children are educated adequately on the topic of safe sex via television and other modalities and that education in schools is superfluous. If I grant Nancy that premise, then the obvious implication is: why waste taxpayer money teaching about abstinence if sexual education is already occurring outside the school (is it only to placate the Religious Right?). Actually, I think that teaching nothing is arguably better than teaching the falsehoods that were labeled "facts" at Mars Middle School.

For the record, contrary to Nancy's implications, I have never advocated taxpayer funds being utilized for abortion or any other type of healthcare and have fought to remove the government from the healthcare realm entirely. However, if the government is going to meddle in healthcare it can not utilize religion in deciding which procedures it will decide to fund.
