Dog treatment coalition bringing help to Butler for ‘both ends of the leash’

The Street Dog Coalition recently had an RV donated to the organization, which it uses as a mobile veterinary clinic complete with all of the tools its vets need to treat dogs. Submitted photo

A mobile clinic will provide veterinary care to dogs June 12 in Butler.

While the organization holding the event, Street Dog Coalition, is already at capacity with registered patients, it will also feature a pet pantry and other community resources in the afternoon.

Tim Lydon, co-lead for Street Dog Coalition, said the event aims to provide aid for “both ends of the leash.”

“What's really special is they're more like resource fairs,” he said about the coalition’s stops around the Pittsburgh area. “We're trying to find human resources. We work both ends of the leash.

“It's a pretty cool event. There's a trainer there. Butler County Humane Society is there giving away free stuff.”

From 9 a.m. until noon, Street Dog Coalition will provide free veterinary care to dogs, and continue to provide resources and the pet pantry afterward until supplies run out.

Lydon said the coalition is still seeking sponsors who can help the organization cover the cost of treating the animals that morning. He said the clinic can perform a full-service treatment for one dog for about $250, so the coalition is seeking donations from businesses or individuals up to that amount.

“Everyone is volunteering their time,” Lydon said of the people working the clinic. “If someone gives $250, that’s what we pay if we treat an animal.”

Lydon said even though the clinic doesn’t have any more room for appointments for its June 12 visit, the coalition has found the Butler area has many people in need of affordable veterinary care. He said the organization visited the area a few months ago and ran out of pet food within about 20 minutes, as a line of people continued to stretch down the block.

He said he hopes to make the clinic a regular occurrence in Butler.

“Our goal is, whenever we go to a place, we come back three or four months later,” Lydon said. “The need is so great up here … We're going to try to invest more time up here.”

Street Dog Coalition will be at 241 N. Main Street in Butler throughout the day Friday, June 12. Its pet pantry and community resource offerings will be available starting at noon.
