BC3 golfer, Butler graduate Leah McClellan cuts 7 strokes at nationals
Out of the four Butler County Community College golfers competing at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III championship tournaments, Butler graduate Leah McClellan was the only to register a second-round score lower than the first.
After posting a 127 in the opening round, McClellan followed up with a 120 at Chautauqua Golf Club’s Lake Course. BC3 women’s teammate Taylor Voloch, a Moniteau product, put up a 114 for the second straight day.
Men’s golfer Mitchell Covert — a graduate of Lincoln High School in Ellwood City — had an 87 Wednesday after a first-round 86, and Mason Phillips turned in a 90 after an 87. Phillips attended Knoch.
The 18 individual men’s and women’s golfers with the lowest score after Friday’s fourth and final round earn All-American status.
Covert and Phillips earned berths in the national championship during the NJCAA Division III Region 20 tournament at the Links at Spring Church in Apollo on May 19. The women’s national championship is an open tournament.
