Victims of July 2024 Trump rally shooting file suit against feds
Two people shot at a July 2024 rally for then-presidential candidate Donald Trump are suing the federal government saying injuries suffered in the incident are attributable to failures by the U.S. Secret Service.
James Copenhaver and David Dutch, along with their wives, filed separate lawsuits in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania Monday seeking damages for injuries sustained in the incident.
According to Copenhaver’s suit, he is seeking reparations for “all injuries sustained ... as a result of being shot and severely, permanently and grievously wounded on July 13, 2024, at approximately 6:11 p.m., while attending a presidential campaign rally located near Butler, Pennsylvania, at the Butler Farm Show Grounds.”
Both Dutch and Copenhaver suffered serious wounds in the shooting. Copenhaver, 75, of Coraopolis, was shot twice, once in the tricep and once in the abdomen. Dutch suffered a bullet wound to his abdomen.
Both men had previously indicated they intended to take civil action over the injuries.
A bipartisan U.S. House task force formed to investigate the shooting and the circumstances leading up to it, found numerous shortcomings in how security at the event was planned and carried out.
Both suits allege negligence and seek damages totaling more than $150,000.
