Congressional leaders must find common ground

The Democrats and Republicans envision two different futures for America. When you sift through all the opposing policies and mud-slinging, it all comes down to money.

Recently, the Democrats have submitted several bills to raise the income tax on millionaires and billionaires to fund new and existing social programs that provide free or affordable healthcare, housing, groceries and education for lower-income earners.

Under Democrats Booker and Van Hollen, millions of low-and middle-income households would pay less or no federal taxes, ranging from $46,000, to $92,000 for married couples. On the other side of the fence, the Republicans seek to lower or eliminate taxes for all income earners, believing that such policies will lower joblessness and shift people away from the dependency of social programs.

Basically, Democrats favor Keynesian economics and Republicans favor supply-side economics. Obviously, there is common ground that both can agree on. Yet, like children arguing over the ownership of a toy, neither side will budge.

Isn’t it time our elected leaders start acting like intelligent adults and put country first over party and over the longevity of their political careers?

George Pikoulas,

Butler
