Steelers dismiss assistant special teams coach Derius Swinton II months into the job
PITTSBURGH — The Steelers have parted ways with assistant special teams coach Derius Swinton II only months after he was hired onto Mike McCarthy’s coaching staff.
The Steelers did not divulge a reason for his dismissal, but ESPN reported it was for a violation of club policy.
Swinton, 41, had been coaching in the NFL since 2009. He worked with nine other teams before joining the Steelers and had been an assistant special teams coach in every season except for two one-year stints as the special teams coordinator for the 49ers (2016) and the Chargers (2021).
Swinton spent the past three seasons as the assistant special teams coach for the Raiders. He was elevated to interim coordinator after the Raiders fired Tom McMahon midseason.
Swinton had not coached previously with McCarthy or special teams coordinator Danny Crossman.
The previous time the Steelers fired a coach before the season started was 2012 when special teams coach Al Everest was let go. That dismissal took place in late August after the team returned to Pittsburgh from training camp in Latrobe.
