MUDDY CREEK TWP — A second suspect is accused in connection with the theft of a boat motor valued at $4,800.

State police on Tuesday charged Christopher L. Anthony, 33, of Chicora with breaking into the Crescent Bay Marine at Moraine State Park in Muddy Creek Township last month and taking an Evinrude E-Tec motor.

He is charged with several felonies, including burglary, trespass, theft and receiving stolen property. He also is charged with possession of a drug paraphernalia and criminal mischief.

Police previously arrested Christopher S. Snyder, 38, of Lyndora on a felony charge of receiving stolen property in the same case.

It was not immediately known when Anthony would be arraigned on charges. He is in the Armstrong County Jail for a probation violation stemming from a 2009 burglary conviction.

Snyder is free on $5,000 unsecured bail. He waived his case to Butler County Court earlier this month.

The criminal investigation began the morning of May 26 when an employee at Crescent Bay Marine discovered the overnight break-in, police said.

Along with the motor, about $900 in currency and $100 worth of candy and beverages were stolen.

It didn’t take long for investigators to identify their suspects, according to court documents.

At 4 p.m. that same day, Snyder and Anthony showed up at West Penn Marine Sales in Connoquenessing Township with the stolen motor that they offered to sell, documents said.

However, employees at West Penn Marine had learned about the break-in and theft at Crescent Bay Marina.

State police were notified. Two Butler Township police detectives, assisting state police, went to West Penn Marine and took both defendants into custody.

When searched, police said, Anthony had six empty stamp bags of suspected heroin, a hypodermic needle and a crack pipe.

Troopers eventually questioned the defendants at the barracks while they continued to gather evidence in the burglary and theft investigation.

Snyder denied knowing where the boat motor came from.

He said that he and Anthony on the night of May 25 were staying at a friend’s house in the 1000 block of East Jefferson Street in Butler. About 1 a.m. May 26, Anthony left the home and returned about three hours later.

With him, Snyder recounted, Anthony had boat registrations and other paperwork as well as money and blanks checks. Snyder remembered that some paperwork included the name of the Crescent Bay Marine owner.

“(Snyder) indicated that Anthony was talking about a boat motor, as well,” according to a police affidavit.

Police on May 27 got a search warrant for the Butler home where the defendants stayed at the time of the burglary and theft.

There, documents said, investigators found business checks, money bags and other documents belonging to Crescent Bay Marine.

Police also seized $1,028 in currency from the pickup truck that the defendants used to drive to West Penn Marine Sales with the stolen motor.
