WARRENDALE — Coming off its first loss of the season, Mars coach Steve Meyers wasn't the least bit worried his team would suffer a letdown.

The Planets, which lost a 5-3 decision to Serra Catholic Jan. 4, were missing six starters due to injuries.

Against South Fayette on Tuesday, five starters were out, yet the Planets reverted to form, using three first-period goals en route to a 6-1 victory at BladeRunners.

"We were missing three defensemen and all our forwards," said Meyers about the loss to Serra. "We were hurting big time, but we're not too concerned right now.

"We stressed a lot this week in practice about coming out (against South Fayette) aggressive. Some guys were down because of the loss. They wanted to strive for the perfect season," Meyers added.

Still, the Planets (13-1) got goals from six different players, including the three in the opening period.

Tyler Whiteford rifled a shot past Lions goalie Mike Coyne 4 minutes, 20 seconds into the game.

The Planets increased their lead late in the first when Nick Blaney found the back of the net 13 seconds into a power play.

Not to be outdone, Elliot Tisdale scored 1:03 later to give Mars a 3-0 advantage.

"To get three right off the bat was great," said Meyers. "Everything went back to normal."

The Planets' defense was strong, giving the Lions (1-13) few opportunities on offense. Backup goalie Chip Grater turned away four shots Tuesday.

When Chris Greco scored with 11:16 left in the second period and Greg Makozy followed with a goal with 9:05 remaining, Mars enjoyed a 5-0 lead.

The Lions got their only goal when Conor Errey took a Shane Coyne pass and scored with 7:18 left in the second period.

Mars' Mike Mazzotta closed out the scoring when he fired a shot just outside the faceoff circle with 8:25 left in the third period.

"We've been pretty blessed this year," said Meyers on his team's depth. "We only have four seniors this year with lots of juniors and sophomores."

Notes: Mars had defeated the Lions 5-0 Oct. 29 in the second game of the season. ... Mars has outscored its opponents 95-15 in 14 games, which includes seven shutouts and four games with only one goal allowed. South Fayette had been outscored 76-24 in 14 games. ... Mars plays Knoch Jan. 22.
