Veteran drivers capture features
BUFFALO TWP — Veteran dirt track drivers Bob Felmlee and Brian Swartzlander led their respective features wire to wire Friday night at Lernerville Speedway.
They felt a little differently about things afterward, however.
Felmlee held off Ed Lynch Jr. to claim his 30th career Sprint feature win at the Sarver oval, but his first since June 6, 2008.
"Two years between wins is a long time. ... I didn't know if I'd ever get one done here again," Felmlee said. "I just started counting laps toward the end because I knew Ed was coming."
All four restarts in the race were spaced out enough — the fifth, 10th, 14th and 19th laps — that Lynch couldn't take advantage of a fast car.
"We were a little better when we were racing green, I thought," Lynch said. "The cushion was the preferred line and we were both up there.
"The racetrack is the same for everybody. You have to figure out how to pass and I couldn't get around him."
Felmlee, of Franklin, started in the front row while Lynch started from the third row. Danny Holtgraver, who started alongside Felmlee, finished third.
"When you start up front, you can't make mistakes and I made a couple," Felmlee said. "But the car's been good and the motor's been good. I managed to stay in front."
Swartzlander managed to stay in front all the way in the Modified feature — but not without a bit of controversy.
Swartzlander's No. 83 car and Del Rougeux Jr.'s No. 20D came into contact on a 22nd-lap restart. Rougeux thought he took the lead, but his car got turned around on Turn 1 and he was sent to the back of the pack.
Rougeux rallied to finish seventh while Jeremiah Shingledecker finished second to Swartzlander.
"That was childish driving," Rougeux said in reference to Swartzlander. "I got the lead on him off Turn 4 (on the restart). I looked to my left and didn't see anybody, so I had the edge.
"I slid down to the bottom, where we both wanted to run, and his car came into mine. That was my racetrack at that point. If (Kevin) Bolland, Shingledecker or I do that, we get sent to the back. Certain drivers can get away with it."
Swartzlander saw the restart differently.
"He jumped the restart, for one thing," the Leechburg resident said. "The race leader is supposed to lead the restart, and that didn't happen. It's unfortunate (Rougeux) got spun around, but that wasn't my fault."
Swartzlander's win was his 66th Modified triumph at Lernerville, pulling him within three of the late Lou Blaney's track record.
In other features:
n Matt Lux of Franklin lost the lead to Gregg Satterlee in lapped traffic on the 11th lap, then got it back the same way on the 22nd lap to win the Late Model Feature.
The win was Lux's fifth career Late Model victory at Lernerville.
n Joe Kelley of Mount Pleasant extended his Sportsman Stock feature win record at the track with his 34th victory. He became the first repeat feature winner this season.
Kelley started in the second row and took the lead from Paul Schreckengost on the ninth lap. He held off a Bob Egley for the win.
Notes: There were 73 cars in the pits, including 25 Sprints. ... Sheldon Haudenschild, son of Outlaws Sprint driver Jac Haudenschild, finished fifth in the Sprint feature. ... Evans City's Brandon Spithaler, Limited Sprint points champion at Sharon Speedway last year, qualified for the Sprint feature through the B-Main Friday and finished 13th.
