Speed lifts BlueSox past Sliders

If you are going to play the outfield at spacious Pullman Park, you better have some speed.

Don't fret. Zach Duggan has you — and centerfield — covered.

With the fence at the venerable ballpark 424 feet away from home plate in center, the outfield has more acreage than some small European countries.

Duggan, though, was able to run down two long fly balls to save runs as the Butler BlueSox rallied past Slippery Rock 6-4 in Prospect Collegiate League baseball action Sunday night.

Right fielder Cameron Squires, no slowpoke himself in the field or on the basepaths, also tracked down a pair of long fly balls that normally find the outfield grass at Pullman Park.

"I tell you what, they cover some ground," said Slippery Rock manager Andy Chalot. "I definitely thought two of those balls were down that they got to. We haven't played anyone who tracks down balls like that."

On the bases, Duggan and Squires also showed off their speed.

Duggan went 3-for-4 with a double and two stolen bases and Squires drove in two runs with a single in the bottom of the fourth inning, stole second base and then scored from second on a weak groundout to first.

Butler manager Jason Wuerfel isn't shy about using his speed, either.

The BlueSox (5-4) stole six bases in the game.

"The two things in baseball that are hard to find are speed and power," said Butler manager Jason Wuerfel. "So, when you are putting together a team, those are the two things you have to find."

The power has been provided by Seneca Valley graduate Kevan Smith, who went 1-for-3 and kept his average at .400.

The speed, though, is a team-wide thing.

Duggan and Squires are leading the charge with four stolen bases each through nine games.

Duggan, also a Seneca Valley graduate and best of friends with Smith, started the season slowly, but has found his groove at the plate, on the bases and in the field recently.

"That's pretty much my game, man. Speed," Duggan said. "I'm not the biggest guy. I'm not going to drive the ball out of the park. Today was pretty much to a T what I try to do every day."

Duggan is well versed in the art of tracking down fly balls. His sprint to the gap to rob Slippery Rock's Sam Trescaso in the top of the seventh inning with a runner on first saved at least one run.

An inning earlier, he ran down a drive to the warning track by Matt Baer and made a diving catch to save another run.

"A lot of that stuff is instinct," Duggan said. "You are either a really good outfielder, or you're not. It's not like an infielder when you can go out and take a million ground balls. In the outfield, you just have to be able to do it. Reading a fly ball has been one of my tools since Little League."

The defense helped make a winner out of Butler starter Ben Ballantine, who pitched six strong innings, striking out four.

Chris Young relieved Ballantine and pitched two scoreless innings before Kurt Roeder pitched the ninth for his first save.

Kevin Kumazec got the loss for Slippery Rock, which led 3-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning. Butler scored four runs in its half of the inning and never trailed again.

The big inning — and poor defense — has been the bugaboo for Slippery Rock (3-6) this season.

"In eight of our nine games we've made three or more errors," Chalot said. "We could be 6-3 instead of 3-6 right now. You just have to make the plays."

After starting the season 0-for-16 at the plate, Duggan is 6-for-10 in his last three games. ... Slippery Rock leads the Prospect league with a .295 team batting average. ... The BlueSox host the Sliders again Monday at 6:35 p.m. for Butler Eagle Night at Pullman Park.
